Will Recruitment Become a “Human Reserved” Industry?

Bill Gates — Co‑Founder of Microsoft — has called for certain jobs to be formally protected as “Human Reserved” roles.

His message is blunt: AI will permanently wipe out many jobs across the economy, especially entry‑ and mid‑level roles. And unless we intervene, market forces will push businesses to replace people with machines at speed.

After 26 years in recruitment, I can say with absolute conviction: Recruitment must be one of those "Human Reserved" categories.

Hiring is not a mechanical process. It’s not just matching data points. It’s human judgement, empathy, intuition, experience and trust. Gates himself argues that some roles — especially those involving care, education, and human‑centred decision‑making — should remain human-led even when AI is capable of doing the work .
